WHAT THE HECK IS A 'SUPER DELEGATE?'

So, it seems that the Democratic Party has set aside close to 20% of the delegates as "Super Delegates."

These individuals are appointed by the party and are not at all beholden to the voters in the primaries. Yes, they can vote for whomever they choose. So the eventual nominee for the Democratic Party will need to win a majority of the delegates by way of votes won throughout the country, but that person must also win a majority of the super delegate votes.

I suppose "win" is the wrong word. Convince? Cajole? Blackmail? Indemnify?

"Some people say" that it is bad enough that we do not have direct representation in our presidential elections (we obviously have the technology and tools to count the popular vote) and have to rely on the Electoral College (more on that later, my friends), but the voters are not even allowed to directly choose the candidate they want to represent them.

But when you consider that one of the "founding fathers," Alexander Hamilton, referred to the common man as "the Great Beast" and thought it was ill-advised that anyone but landed gentry and gentlemen of wealth had the wits and understanding to make substantive decisions about how and who should run this country. it is not surprising that remnants of diluting the popular vote still exist in our culture.
